Des Wood

Des Wood has been a keen fisherman for many years and in that time has been aware of a gradual but significant decline in fishing stocks and in some cases access restrictions to many prime fishing areas around the state. As a father of two and grandfather of three, Des is keen to ensure that the pleasure he has gained, not only in catching fish but in enjoying the friendship which exists among fishers will be something that future generations can also experience.

He has concerns that at most times commercial considerations and the unnecessary provision of fishing "no take" zones in Marine Parks are being put ahead of the interests of recreational fishers. He believes that with careful management of the existing resource including quotas and appropriate bag limits, adequate fish stocks can be sustained to allow an equitable sharing of that resource among all users.

Des' interest covers more than just angling, but extends to crabbing and other shell fish with particular emphasis on the Peel fishery. Des has had a very close involvement with the Recfishwest fishing clinics initiative.

Des has been a Board member of Recfishwest for ten years and in that time has been Chairman of the Communications Committee for three years, Deputy Chairman for two years and Chairman of the Recfishwest Board for four years. Des has also represented recreational fishing interests on the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee for the last nine years, is Chairman of the RLIAC Compliance Sub-Committee and is also the Recreational Representative on the Abalone Management Advisory Committee.

Additionally Des is a member of the Minister's Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee, Chairman of the South West Regional Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee and Recfishwest's representative on the Board of Recfish Australia.
