Recreational fishing South Cottesloe/ Owen Anchorage Shellsand Dredging
Dear Members and Corresponding Members
Enclosed are a number of submissions and
items we believe may be of interest to you.
Recreational Fishing at South Cottesloe
A group calling itself the Cottesloe Marine
Sanctuary Committee recently placed this advertisement in the Claremont/Nedlands
Post community newspaper.
Their agenda to have recreational fishing
totally prohibited at the south Cottesloe reef is very clear.
Recfishwest was particularly scathing of
the original proposal to have this area declared as a Fish Habitat Protection
Area (FHPA) and have enclosed our submission in the matter. Despite this the FHPA
was recently declared.
Fortunately, recreational fishing was deemed
to be an activity compatible with the FHPA declaration and is still permitted.
However it appears that this is not good
enough for this small local interest group and they are mounting a political campaign
to achieve their end.
Two can play at that game.
We encourage that you also write, fax or
E-mail the Minister for Fisheries to inform him of your views in this matter.
Remember that their success may only encourage other "not in my backyard"
interest groups.
Owen Anchorage Shellsand Dredging
This is a matter that has shocked every
thinking angler and the Recfishwest Board.
The EPA has recommended to the Minister
for the Environment that Cockburn Cement Ltd should be permitted to continue dredging
for shellsand on Owen Anchorage.
Enclosed is the Recfishwest submission
to the Cockburn Cement Ltd proposal, the summary and recommendations of the EPA
Bulletin 1033 and the Recfishwest Appeal against the EPA recommendations.
Although appeals are yet to be heard it may soon be up to the Minister for the
Environment and the WA Government to make a decision in this matter.
We urge that you consider these documents
and if, like the Recfishwest Board, you feel that this is an inappropriate outcome,
you must make your views known to the Government.
Again, put your thoughts in writing and
post or fax them to the Minister for the Environment. Send a copy to your local
member and the Premier. Remember, politics is a numbers game.
The contact details for the Minister for the Environment
are:
Hon Dr JM Edwards MB BS MLA
Minister for the Environment and Heritage

for you to use.
A further way to make your views known
is provided via the Western Angler website (www.westernangler.com.au). An E-mail
submit form has been provided to ensure messages are delivered directly to the
Minister for the environment. We encourage that you use it.
Also enclosed for your information is a copy of the Recfishwest submission to
the West Coast and Gascoyne Reviews.
