Recfishwest calls for new members and recreational fishers to get behind their peak body

Minister for Fisheries, Jon Ford acknowledged the input of Recfishwest but added:- "The government has recently set Recfishwest the challenge to dramatically increase their membership in order to secure future funding... It is important that the recreational sector makes a direct commitment to the peak body."

Black Jewfish not tough enough for catch and release

Research on mortality of line-caught black jewfish shows they are extremely susceptible to severe damage from barotrauma, and internal injuries to essential organs from gut hooking with traditional 'J' hooks. Are no longer really a catch-and-release target unless fished for in relatively shallow water and handled very carefully.

Peel Harvey inlet closed to crab fishing until 1 November

Peel Harvey Inlet is closed to recreational and commercial crab fishing for two months. From 1 November the daily bag limits for crabs will be halved to 10 per person / 20 per boat in the West Coast region.

Safety equipment to be installed at dangerous rock fishing locations

Experienced amateur fisherman Ray Walker and Busselton Dept Environment and Conservation have been trialing a safety anchor system at some dangerous rock fishing spots in the South West. After summer there will be about 70 anchors in popular fishing spots including at Contos where two fishermen drowned in August.

Big fines prove the folly of fishing offences

Following complaints from fishers, a Department of Fisheries surveillance operation leads to two men being fined $3,110 each for raiding lobster pots of other fishers in the waters outside Fremantle Port.

Strategy to repopulate waterways

The Native Fish Strategy seeks to repopulate the Murray - Darling waterways with rare and endangered indigenous fish which once thrived throughout the entire system. Murray cod and Golden perch travel over 100 kilometres upstream to spawn and then come back to exactly the same snag.

Moray eel found to have double set of jaws

Like the predator in "Alien", moray eels thrust a second set of jaws with razor-edged, hook-like teeth from deep in their throat to seize their prey. This jaw can thrust forward into the mouth at high speed.
