Western Australians invited to public briefings about management of recreational fishing.

Public briefings will be held on the sustainability of iconic fish starting at Hillarys on October 9, followed at Fremantle, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton and Geraldton. The public would have the chance to discuss future options for sustainably managing recreational catches of demersal scalefish such as pink snapper, dhufish and baldchin groper and to help them submit their responses to the discussion paper.

Concern over alleged illegal fishing in Abrolhos fish protection areas

A second detection within three months has raised concerns over alleged illegal fishing by Western Australian commercial fishing boats within special fish protection areas at the Abrolhos Islands.

Public invited to discuss Peel-Harvey waterways

Although the Dawesville Cut has cleared the previously polluted Peel-Harvey Estuary, the phosphorus input to the rivers in the systems catchment is continuing. A water quality improvement plan for the rivers and estuary of the Peel-Harvey system aims to reduce phosphorus levels that are a known cause of algal blooms.

Community information sessions on planning for marine parks in South Coast.

South coast communities are offered the chance to meet members of an advisory group helping to plan for the future of the unique south coast marine environment from Cape Leeuwin to the South Australian border. The next meeting will be held in Denmark 17 - 19 October. Details will be published in local newspapers.

Anglers called on to help with barramundi research

Pilbara anglers are asked to join volunteers who are helping to find out more about the abundance and vulnerability of barramundi in the region. Involves learning how to properly tag barramundi, catching, measuring and weighing, recording data, releasing, and recording data from recaptured tagged fish.

Shire decides on State Government offer of assistance to repair and rebuild Busselton Jetty

In a long term decision that might not be popular with some, Busselton Council meeting 26 September resolved to accept the State's offer to fund its portion of the Busselton Jetty rebuild, with some matters to be negotiated. Still no firm indication from the Federal Government whether or not they will back this project.

Fisheries Minister takes action to safeguard sustainability

New limits affecting commercial and recreational fishers have been set in nearly every New Zealand fishery, including deep water, inshore and freshwater fisheries, to protect the sustainability of key fish stocks. Increased deemed values may lead some fishers to try and avoid liability by discarding unwanted fish. This is a criminal act and guilty fishers face large fines and potential forfeiture of quota and vessels.

Cape to Cape beach clean up on again mid October.

Volunteers are wanted to grab their gloves and bags on the weekend of 13-14 October 2007 to clean up their favourite stretch of coastline between Cape Leeuwin, Cape Naturaliste and Busselton.
