Bid to save fish could see coast closed to anglers.

WA Fisheries Minister Jon Ford floated a plan to quarantine sensitive fishing areas for up to five years as part of a wide-ranging management review to deal with the effects of population growth and technology on fish stocks.

Water Resources Minister John Kobelke summarised a report investigating the Collie-Wellington Dam as a future drinking water source. Using the dam for drinking water would impact on current recreational use.

Countries to discuss managing aquatic genetic resources

Improved policies are needed to conserve aquatic genetic resources. Rapid expansion of aquaculture and the overexploitation of many capture fisheries have created conditions where irresponsible use of natural resources can result in adverse environmental and social impacts, intersectoral conflicts and unsustainability.

Western Australian Fishing Industry Council bulletin - commercial wetline fishing changes.

WAFIC is pleased that a formal management plan will now be introduced for the West Coast and Gascoyne commercial "wet line" fisheries. WAFIC is currently looking at case history and may take legal advice to establish where the current licence holders stand in relation to these management changes.

Study identifies Perth's future boating facilities

Compromise will be needed if the Perth metropolitan coastline is to accommodate growing demand for recreational boating facilities, while protecting marine and coastal environments. Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan:- "Over the next 20 years, we will need a major increase both in boat ramps and boat pens between Two Rocks and Singleton."

Call to Pilbara fishers to Fish for the Future

A new partnership between Rio Tinto Iron Ore and the WA Department of Fisheries will be launched on 27 June to reinforce and build on the Department's long-standing commitment to Fish for the Future and support for the region's dedicated fisheries volunteers.
