Women cast off cancer's grip with fly fishing

Always on the lookout to broaden the positive aspects of fishing, Recfishwest has reacted promptly to research showing that fly-fishing can have significant benefits for women recovering from breast cancer. Sporting special pink fly-fishing shirts and armed with new rigs that Recfishwest bought for the occasion, 11 amazingly cheerful and positive women turned up to give it a go at the first RFW Pink Fly-Fishing Clinics at Point Walter sand spit.

Ross River virus risk for Perth and South-West

WA Department of Health is reminding people living or holidaying in the South-West or the metropolitan area to take care against mosquito bites following an increase in reported cases of Ross River Virus in recent weeks. Above average late spring rains and the flooding of breeding sites have contributed to the increased risk. People do not need to alter their travel plans, but it is important to avoid mosquito bites by taking a few simple steps.

Blue Mud Bay claim nothing to do with fishing rights

Lawyer for a group of traditional owners from Eastern Arnhem Land declared himself "completely at sea" when asked how a person would know they were in Aboriginal-controlled waters. There was no intention under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act to create the right to have exclusive possession of fisheries in the intertidal zone.

DEC offers marine park fishing assurances

The WA Department of Environment and Conservation says new marine parks proposed for the Pilbara and Eighty Mile Beach in the north-west will only restrict fishing in areas in need of strict biodiversity protection. "Marine parks have some zones where no fishing is allowed and these are usually a small proportion of the area of the marine park, but they're very important areas for biodiversity protection."
