Perth beaches hit by poison flowing from drains

Bacteria found in faeces and dangerous heavy metals such as lead and copper have been found in contaminated stormwater flowing into Perth's most popular beaches. The Department of Health involvement would include samples of recreational fish catches. (Areas include Cottesloe's Fish Habitat Protection Area.)

Prohibition on Fishing (Rottnest Island) Order 2007

Defines sanctuary, etc zones, fishing, spearfishing and netting restrictions at Rottnest Island from 1 July.

Recreational fish restocking road map.

National guidelines to improve fish stocks targeted by recreational fishers have been set at a workshop in Brisbane. In saltwater, the process should begin by identifying and then tackling the reasons for stock decline, from environmental degradation and recruitment bottlenecks to over-fishing.

Luxury fish prices tipped to rise as catches cut.

Prices could rise for some of WA's most expensive fish after the State Government decided to protect depleted fish stocks along a vast stretch of the coast.. Fish caught in the area were at the "luxury end" and were already very expensive but there was little doubt prices would rise. "That's the price of sustainability..."

Drag nets to be prohibited in the Peel Harvey Estuary

Recreational fishers will be prohibited from using hand trawl nets in the Mandurah Peel Harvey Estuary and its tributaries from July 6. Fisheries Minister Jon Ford said the nets have been used by people fishing for prawns but the impact on other species in the estuary, particularly undersize crabs, has led to the prohibition.
