2006/2007 State of Fisheries report

Released 6 June 2008, the "State of Fisheries 2006/7" only has contents, data and comments about catches up to 2005/2006. Little is included about 2006/2007, with nothing about the last 12 months. Fishery reports contain commercial and recreational activities to ensure that the aggregate catch harvested from each stock is clear and to show how it is being shared between the fishing sectors within each bioregion of the State.

Research to examine the sharing of rock lobster resources

Community expectations and demands over the use of fish resources will change over time, so a framework is needed which allows for adjustments to allocations, both within and between sectors. FRDC is funding a project to establish a re-allocation framework for transferring or adjusting rock lobster shares between sectors.

Effect of "fish lip grips" on bones and tendons to be researched

A $17,000 study into the effects of lifting fish from water using fish mouth grips will use high tech scanning equipment and new examination techniques. Research is aimed at determining what effect the grips have on the fish's bones and tendons when fish are lifted with these types of grips. Best practice is to always support the weight of large fish, avoid grips with inbuilt scales and avoid holding a fish up by the grip to weigh it.

Marina fish kill due to lack of oxygen in water

Tests of dead fish, including mullet, yellowfin whiting, trumpeter, bream and crabs collected from the Ocean Reef Marina in a fish kill on 27 May showed numerous swollen blood capillaries in their gills, changes commonly associated with low dissolved oxygen. No toxic algal species nor significant bacteria were found.

20 plus years since construction of last new metro public boat ramp

The last public boat-launching facility to be constructed in its entirety in the Perth metropolitan area was in the mid-1980s, located within the Hillarys Boat Harbour. $1.3 million of the $6.5 million funding collected from recreational boaters has been allocated for upgrades of metropolitan boat ramps through the RBFS.

Review of fisheries consultative arrangements

Well-targeted, fit-for-purpose engagement of stakeholders and community views are critical when deciding about the use and conservation of fisheries resources to ensure effective fisheries management decisions. Comments are sought on a review for improvements to the current system and development of an effective and efficient framework for stakeholder engagement that meets the high expectations of Government and stakeholders.
