Free DVD about using the Release Weight to improve the survival of released fish

Recfishwest has produced a DVD about using the Release Weight, available from Tackle Shops (while stocks last) to be given away FREE with purchases of a Release Weight. The DVD includes some fascinating above and underwater footage of the Release Weight in action, showing fish clearly suffering the effects of barotrauma swimming off strongly with the aid of the release weight. By arrangement with FRDC, the DVD also contains segments from "Gently does it" covering releasing several popular species of fish and general information about deep hooking and barotrauma. All videos can also be downloaded for viewing.

Fish "missing" from WA's oceans

This summer, West Coast recreational fishers will face the toughest restrictions yet with some popular species off limits altogether. The drastic cuts are already facing a backlash. Fishermen, charter operators, researchers businesses and the Government agree the days of unlimited year round fishing are over for some species, but questions now include whether the new regime is the most effective approach, and the scientific justification.

Fish recording board helps record catch details for Research Angler Program logbooks

A wet recording sheet made of white matt finish laminex helps recreational fishers easily record their catch out on the water and later complete their log books. Individual fish lengths can be easily recorded, with kept or released and length categories by placing fish on the tray and making a mark directly on the board.

10,382 boat crews in ocean line fishing creel survey

A 12-month survey of recreational boat based fishing between Augusta and Kalbarri on the West Coast during 2005-06 calculated the recreational catches of Dhufish at 186 tonnes 35,222 fish, combined whiting species 46 tonnes 404,376 fish, Pink snapper 40 tonnes 17,808 fish, Australian herring 40 tonnes 288,392 fish. The required 50% reduction in catch means the 2005/6 catch of about 11,000 Dhufish in the metro zone needs to be reduced to 5,500 per year, or only about 140 to 160 per week outside the 3 or 4 month closed season.
