Recfishwest asks for fishing and infrastructure commitments in State Election Policy
Recfishwest's election policy identifies many issues which are seen as fundamental for the next term of government, and seeks the support of political parties. These initiatives represent significant challenges and potential issues for recreational fishing over the next four years. It is important that political parties give definitive commitments against which the recreational fishing voters can make their decisions. Responses from political parties will be published on the RFW website to inform the recreational fishing public.

Expert recreational panel to advise a Liberal Government on West Coast fishing restrictions.
A Liberal Government, if elected, will establish an expert recreational fishing panel to review the proposed demersal fishing ban and evaluate the environmental, social and economic impact of the restrictions, with a view to relaxing the bans, but would not act before the judgment of the expert panel. Commitment is for an appropriate balance between the need to manage fish stocks and the enjoyment of recreational fishing.

Identifying and distinguishing between juvenile salmon and herring
Fishers along the lower West Coast and South Coast regularly catch juvenile West Australian salmon in estuaries and coastal embayments. Unfortunately, many fishers mis-identify juvenile salmon and believe they have caught Australian herring which have no size limit and a larger bag limit. Some also believe these juveniles are "salmon trout", but there is no such fish. Clear photos and information on identification.

Major marine stakeholders agree on urgent need for planning reform
A multi-sector marine planning process is overdue to provide for equitable resource sharing to serve the best interests of the State and include a functional, representative system of fully protected areas. Stakeholders look forward to when agencies and the community could negotiate a future for WA's State waters in a cooperative framework free from the debilitating conflict that has characterized the marine reserve issue.
