Cobbler protected in Swan/Canning Rivers, Black bream protected in Heirisson Island lakes.
New rules provide 10 years protection for Cobbler in the Swan and Canning Rivers. Vulnerability of black bream in the Heirisson Island lakes was the key factor leading to the permanent prohibition on fishing there.

Recreational fishers take the right steps to ensure sustainability
Recfishwest praised a range of announcements by Minister for Fisheries, Jon Ford, and the Department of Fisheries designed to ensure the sustainability of the fish resources of Western Australia. The decisions have all been instigated by Recfishwest or regional Recreational Fishing Advisory Committees and clearly demonstrate the commitment of the recreational fishing sector to proactive management.

New marine sanctuaries enacted on Rottnest Island.
The new sanctuary zones and the demersal sanctuary zone will lead to important changes to the use of the Marine Reserve. Anchoring is still allowed in these zones. Recreational fishing is banned from 17% of the shoreline. People caught breaching the "no fishing" rules face fines of up to $10,000. Detailed maps from:-

New focus on WA South coast as first regional marine planning initiative.
The first regional marine planning initiative to be carried out in WA will consider and cover State waters from Cape Leeuwin right through to the South Australian border. Currently there is no framework to integrate the contributions and work of the various marine industry sectors, agencies and community groups.

Imported seafood products have repeatedly contained potentially harmful residues.
The US Food and Drug Administration announced broader import control of all farm-raised catfish, basa, shrimp, dace, and eel from China. Farm-raised seafood was contaminated with anti-microbial agents which may increase antibiotic resistance to a critically important class of antibiotics or be carcinogenic.

Seafood Import Protocols 'Out of Step'
Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Senator Kerry O'Brien called on the government to follow the actions of the United States Food and Drug Administration and crackdown on unsafe seafood imports from China. AQIS does require some testing for certain products, but there are serious holes in the current program.

Out of season marron fishing case attracts $12,317 in fines.
Three men have each been fined $1,000, plus mandatory additional penalties of $3,000 each for 75 marron in joint possession. Fisheries officers are keenly aware of illegal fishing in early summer,and keep a special look out for this type of activity.

School's in for future fishing leaders.
Recfishwest's "Addicted to Fishing not Drugs" program saw 1500 students and young people from Esperance to Kununurra learning the right ways to fish and to believe in themselves and their abilities. Future recreational fishing leaders under the age of 30 will be brought together for a workshop at the Abrolhos Islands where they will be educated and mentored by experienced leaders in recreational fishing.
