Ballot papers and AGM information sent to Recfishwest members.
On 8 October Recfishwest mailed out the Ballot papers and information for the Annual General Meeting. Financial individual members are entitled to one vote and family members are entitled to two votes. Postal votes must be returned by 5 pm Thursday 23 October. If you have not received your information, please contact Recfishwest. Fisheries Minister Norman Moore will attend the AGM.

Out of season marron fishing doesn't pay
A Donnybrook man was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $694 in court costs after being found guilty of fishing for marron 12 days after the 2008 season closed. He had admitted he was going to catch marron, after Fisheries Officers observed him walking along the dam bank dropping handfuls of chicken pellets.

Swan River Trust decides not to prosecute after fish kill
An estimated 80 black bream died in a South Perth lake when groundwater with particularly high levels of ammonia and sulphides was pumped into the lake under a permit. The Swan River Trust decided there are not reasonable grounds for prosecution. Another similar fish kill at the Barrack St. jetty is being investigated.

Snapper stocks plummet in south-east Queensland
The Department of Fisheries says snapper stocks in south-east Queensland have been dangerously overfished and seasonal closures may be necessary. Public meetings have been held to discuss management options.

Marine Park increases protection on capital city's doorstep
After more than 8000 submissions, 1100 hotline calls and 10 public information sessions, sixteen per cent of the Moreton Bay Marine Park will be protected by no take sanctuary zones (green zones), up from the current half a per cent. Included are:- a $15 million Structural Adjustment Program to buy licences from commercial fishers who voluntarily leave the industry and reduce fishing pressure; a $1 million trial artificial reef program to provide recreational anglers with alternative fishing locations; "Go slow" areas to help to reduce the risk of boat strikes to some of Moreton Bay's iconic species such as turtles and dugong; and a 5 year scientific monitoring program.
