Minister's advisory council a step in the right direction for recreational fishing

Recfish Australia, the peak representative body for recreational fishers at a national level, welcomed the announcement of the Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee by federal fisheries minister Tony Burke. Speaking at the National Recreational Fishing Conference in Canberra sponsored by the Aust Government and hosted by Recfish Australia, CEO Len Olyott said the announcement could not have come at a better time.

Government agencies not convinced of environmental safety of salt works

View of the Department of Fisheries is that proposed improvements are not sufficient to convince them that the project will not have significant and long-lasting deleterious effects on the environment and ecological processes and consequently on the long-standing sustainable fishing and aquaculture activities within the Gulf. Contact new WA Government and urge them to accept the EPA's unconditional rejection of the plan.

Recfishing awards recognise excellence and contribution

The winners of the 2008 Recfishing awards recognising the contributions and excellence to recreational fishing were all worthy recipients. The finalists and all nominees deserve to be recognised. Whilst there can only be one winner for each category, there will continue to be many winners, particularly the angling public. Recfishwest ED Frank Prokop won the Mal Ramsay "Lifetime Achievement Award" for 20 years' effort.

Scientific hunch may save thousands from toxic fish poisoning

Ciguatera poisoning, giving acute nausea, vomiting, tingling and pain, results from eating predatory species near the top of the food chain which accumulate the toxins from fish that have fed on toxic micro algae. An effective treatment for neurotoxic shellfish poisoning also seems to block the effect of the ciguatera toxin.

Recreation poses a very minor risk in water catchment areas relative to other risks

Findings of report commissioned by DEC and DSR to address divergent views on Policy 13 and give an independent, balanced analysis of the information available about recreation in drinking water catchments include:- There is no published evidence linking recreational land use to negative impacts on downstream drinking water supply quality; blanket ban of all recreation does not recognise the potential for low risk activity, runs counter to international good practice and an integrated approach to catchment management.

Outcomes of fisheries consultative arrangements review announced

New consultative arrangements should focus on outcomes and be less prescriptive about when, how and with whom consultation must occur. Legislative commitment to consult with stakeholders should be enhanced through establishment of a performance-based consultative framework, supported by principles for effective consultation. Scientific and specific expert advice to be available to inform fisheries management decisions.
