Bacteria cause large fish kill in Marine Park
Aquaculture company Western Kingfish could lose up to 70 per cent of its stock after bacteria wiped out about 15,000 Yellowtail Kingfish at its Jurien Bay Marine Park offshore fish farm. The Company was implementing action to minimise future losses, but was expecting to be left with as few as 16,000 of the 50,000 fish it started with. Samples have been submitted to Dept of Fisheries for clinical investigation.

Over 5500 fish contribute to greater understanding of tailor stocks
2000 recreationally caught tailor were measured at popular fishing locations over a five-day period, and nearly 350 tailor frames were collected and processed. The sex, age, and size information from these fish frames and 3000 other collected contributes to detailed stock assessments to detect significant changes in length structure, sex ratio or age structure and to evaluate the appropriateness of fisheries management arrangements.

Logue Brook Dam to reopen for recreational use
Boating enthusiasts, anglers and water skiers will be able to return to Logue Brook from 1 Dec after a report to the State Government found that recreation poses a very minor risk relative to other activities in the catchment areas. A review of existing studies found "no published evidence" linking recreation to adverse impacts on downstream drinking water supply. Decision still to be made if this dam would be a drinking water source.

Research looks to understand low juvenile rock lobster count
Researchers hope a comprehensive study will help explain one of the lowest baby lobster counts in 40 years. Dept of Fisheries will submit a project proposal with CSIRO for funding to the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation about oceanographic modeling to help evaluate the effect of breeding stock in different regions and environmental factors on puerulus settlement, and expand juvenile abundance sampling.

Boating Industry Association proposes daily demersal fishing licences
Recreational fishermen would have to apply for daily demersal fishing licences to take popular species such as dhufish and pink snapper, under a boating industry proposal to slash the catch of vulnerable stocks. Stricter bag, boat and fish-size limits will apply from 2009, but the measures are not expected to go far enough to achieve a 50 per cent cut in the catch as recommended. Other management options are covered in the report.
