Regional Policy Officer vacancy in Recfishwest's expanding team

Recfishwest requires the services of an exceptional, dynamic individual for the role of Regional Policy Officer. The person will be required to regularly travel to regional centres, report to the Principal Policy Officer and Recfishwest Board on the collective views and directions of regional recreational fishers, develop Recfishwest policies and prepare submissions. Anglers urged to have their say at recreational fishing meetings

Recreational fishers have been urged to have their say about future opportunities for recreational fishing at eight forums to be held across the State, and to contribute to the development of new projects that enhance recreational fishing. Some of the ideas expected to be discussed include the stocking of mulloway and bream in bays and inlets, a school education program and the provision of recreational fishing reefs in ocean waters.

$700,000 for new boats for WA marine parks

Three new boats have been delivered to improve the management of marine parks and marine wildlife protection operations. The boats will be used in the Shoalwater Islands, Marmion and Swan Estuary Marine Parks.

Audit of Jurien Bay Marine Park finds failures

The first formal audit of a WA Marine park reports that Jurien Bay MP appears to be failing to meet the two primary objectives of comprehensive protection of its biodiversity through provision of adequate sanctuary zones, and objectives for the conservation of populations of targeted finfish. Recommendations include removal of commercial fishing "exemptions", different recreational fishing rules and better communications.

Easy link to restricted fishing area boundaries for GPS and plotters

GPS and Google Earth files have been created from selected Fisheries data so that boundary lines, points and labels for some areas closed or restricted to fishing can be downloaded to a GPS or Marine Chart Plotter.

Shire welcomes Jurien Bay jetty funding

Construction of a new jetty at Jurien Bay could begin as early as next year after the State Government allocated $750,000 for the foreshore and jetty redevelopment in the first round of the Royalties for Regions Grants Scheme. The local community and Shire have been exploring ways to save the two 40 year old wooden jetties, after the Department of Planning and Infrastructure planned to knock them down two years ago.

Impact of proposed Cockburn Sound port on snapper and crabs

Cockburn Sound plays a critical role in the life history strategies of many marine species, including the highly valued pink snapper and blue swimmer crab. The proposed Kwinana Quay development may reduce spawning success for snapper due to alterations to water circulation that would disrupt the retention of progeny in Cockburn Sound. Genetic analysis of blue swimmer crabs from Cockburn Sound, Warnbro Sound and the Swan River showed either a single biological stock or a series of overlapping stocks.
