Crab fishery in the Peel-Harvey Estuary requires more thorough consideration

Based on the information provided in the preliminary report, Recfishwest sees little evidence that a change to the current Sept-Oct closure to include Nov to 15 Dec would make a significant contribution to the long term sustainability of this important fishery. Consideration should be given to a complete closure of the crab fishery during winter to protect females. Catch of undersize crabs should be managed by education and compliance.

Minster confirms 5% share for recreational lobsters

Minister Moore has announced management arrangements for the commercial western rock lobster fishery, setting a catch target of 5,500 tonnes to protect the sustainability of the fishery, smooth the catch and reduce the economic impact of the record low puerulus count in the past three years. Reductions to recreational rock lobster bag, boat and possession limits were introduced in December 2008. The 2009-10 season would be the first time that the Integrated Fisheries Management shares of 95% commercial and 5% recreational would be implemented for the fishery. The catch will be monitored weekly, with a formal review in January 2010.

Whale carcass sends tiger sharks into feeding frenzy

Tiger sharks have been enjoying a feeding frenzy in Bundegi Sanctuary zone in the Ningaloo Marine Park following the death of a humpback whale. Keen fisherman Adam Gallash witnessed the first hours of the attack and took video footage. There were 10 to 12 tiger sharks of between 6 to 13 feet just feasting on the whale.
