Port Rockingham marina given EPA approval

The Environmental Protection Authority has released advice and recommendations to the Minister for Environment on the proposal to construct and operate a new marina located near Rockingham. The marina has been designed to allow for a rapid water body flushing rate, reducing the potential for algal blooms and other water quality issues. There is a two week public appeal period on the report closing 13th October 2009.

Rock lobster recommendations not consistent with Integrated Fisheries Management

Recfishwest believes that the recommendations for recreational Rock Lobster are not consistent with IFM. The recreational sector is currently catching about 2%, well below its formal allocation of 5%, and is extremely unlikely to take 275 tonnes in the coming season if the commercial fishery is restricted to 5,500 tonnes. A bag limit cut from 8 to 6 was applied at the start of the 2008/09 season representing a cut of 25%.

Comments wanted on recreation activities within public drinking water source areas

A Parliamentary committee is asking for community views on the social, economic and environmental values and costs of recreation access to drinking water catchments. Includes possible recreation sites or opportunities available in the Perth hills and south west water catchments. Deadline for submissions 13 Nov.

Minister lifts fishing ban threat hanging over anglers at Green's Pool

Department of Fisheries had received 49 responses for prohibiting fishing at Green's Pool, 13 against the prohibition. Most submissions supporting the ban were from individuals wanting the area to be a marine sanctuary rather than to address the issues of conflict and swimmer safety. Proper signage and encouraging anglers to restrict their fishing activities when swimmers are around will resolve most of these conflicts.

Conservationists push for marine sanctuaries off WA coast

A group of Australian and international conservation organisations has a campaign urging the Federal government to create large marine sanctuaries off the WA coast. Green groups have strategies to maximise no-fishing zones in Marine Parks, making few distinctions between commercial and recreational fishing activities, and using incorrect and misleading information on survival rates of released fish and impacts of recreational fishing. Peak fishing bodies have called on the conservation sector to work with them, not against.
