Fisheries "Reserve effect": in light of recent studies, is it settled science?

The concept that no-take marine reserves can benefit nearby fisheries by supplying them with larvae and adult fish is central to reserves' potential role in fisheries management. Research on the effect has typically been difficult to carry out. Should the reserve effect no longer be viewed simply as a theory but as a documented, expected phenomenon, as "settled science"? Recent studies show:- Not every site will produce a reserve effect; Three central dilemmas need to be resolved; and Is the effect large enough to be meaningful?

Anglers urged to share tales of longtail tuna

In recognition of the species' popularity among recreational anglers, longtail tuna was declared a 'recreational-only' species by the federal government in December 2006. Coastal anglers are being encouraged to help ensure the long-term sustainability of this species by reporting catches using a new online system. Fortunately, longtail tuna have not been heavily fished in Australia, so we can ensure the population remains healthy for future generations of recreational fishers to enjoy. It's your species ...help look after it.

Boating and Fishing Council of Australia brings together Australia's peak groups

The BFCA brings a powerful development for marine, outboard, recreational fishing and tackle/trade groups. BFCA provides Government with a central portal for direct consultation on all federal policy related issues, and give recreational fishers and boaters a national voice when things go wrong. The recreational fishing and boating sector is at a pivotal and concerning cross roads. The keys to moving forward are co-management outcomes that work with communities, honest consultation and decisions based on credible science.

Black bream enduring increased salinity levels

Researchers from the University of WA studying the effects of increased salinity on black bream in the Wellstead Estuary and Bremer River have found some surprising levels of endurance. Fish carrying surgically implanted acoustic transmitters have been found to swim as far as ten kilometres over two days. It is rare for fish to be so mobile. Studies will continue to determine whether they're looking for food or just to pick out habitats of appropriate salinity. It provides some really important information about critical habitats and environmental conditions that must be managed to sustain healthy populations of black bream.

Have you seen this???

It's true! No, really it is! The information came in an email. And with photos to prove it! But go to http://www.snopes.com/ to see the real history of the ludicrous "true" news that people so quickly pass on. Topics of fish and fishing are subject to absurd claims and facts that many quickly embrace and pass on. Not all seemingly outrageous reports that drop into your inbox are false, but false reports return again and again.
