Fisheries-Woodside education partnership to put students in the know

A partnership between the Dept of Fisheries and leading oil and gas giant Woodside would give WA students and teachers better tools to study our marine environment. For most Australians the marine environment is an unknown world. By educating our young people we can help secure its future. It is important students understand WA's marine environment in order to make informed decisions about its sustainable management.

Fishermen must beware of mako fishing laws

Recreational anglers fishing for mako sharks are warned that despite a 'backdown' by the Federal Government on a ban on the fishing of the species, severe restrictions still apply from 29 January. No recreational fishermen is allowed to catch and take mako sharks in Commonwealth waters. The listing of the three shark species as migratory species under national environmental law is a mandatory legal requirement until the Act is changed.

Scientific investigation of Swan River boat wash and wind wave action

The Swan River Trust enters the second stage of research into the effects of boat wash on shoreline erosion, building on results from groundbreaking investigations in 2009. The work is in collaboration with the Department of Transport, supported by ferry operators and BIAWA. The research will be undertaken by Curtin University Centre for Marine Science and Technology to verify the modelling results in the initial report.

Health Dept:- Fremantle Port dredging not a public health risk

A large murky plume of silt has ballooned into ocean waters outside the river, and reduced water clarity within the lower reaches of the Swan River at other times. The Department of Health has reassured the public that the dredging operation currently underway at Fremantle Port does not pose a risk to human health. Water samples taken so far were well within the chemical and microbiological public health guidelines. Activities in the area such as swimming, diving, and collecting fish and crustaceans, do not pose any excess risk to public health.
