Towards Resilient Recreational Fisheries

The 6th World Recreational Fishing Conference, 1-4 August, 2011 in Berlin will be attended by delegates from across the world. It is aimed at increasing dialogue and knowledge about the diversity, dynamics and future prospects of recreational fisheries. The conference will let delegates exchange and discuss cutting edge management orientated recreational fisheries science to increase the ability of researchers and managers to understand different scientific approaches and to appreciate and respond to potentially divergent perspectives.

Pew slammed over 'bully boy' tactics

Australian anglers are not alone in their dislike for Pew's methods. A letter alerts readers that the Pew Environment Group continues pushing their non-science-based environmental programs and anti-fishing agenda, lurking behind a local Pew-financed group in the Marianas. Pew's tentacles have forced their way into numerous other marine environmental groups, not surprising when most of these smaller groups need funds to survive. Modelling research relies on the integrity of the scientists who are supported by handouts from Pew.

Recfishwest's Strategic Plan 2010-12 aims to promote recreational fishing as a rewarding experience, and for Recfishwest to be the effective voice, in all forums, to promote the best interests of recreational fishers in Western Australia. Key issues and priority actions State-wide and in the four fisheries bioregions are listed.

Recfishwest supports early quota system for commercial lobster fishery

Responding to a request for comments on Dept of Fisheries proposals, Recfishwest supports the introduction of a quota management system as a matter of urgency for the commercial fishery, and encourages moving to an interim quota system for 2010/11. Proposals for year round commercial access are not supported. Either spatial or temporal separation is needed to prevent commercial over-exploitation near recreational access points.

New wetland to reduce river nutrients

A new wetland will be created to help reduce nutrient pollution into the Canning River from a drain catchment area, one of the highest contributors of nutrients. Nutrients can lead to algal blooms and fish deaths. Work including the removal of contaminated sediment and planting of 48,000 native plants will be completed by Dec.

Fish deaths in Swan River

Officers removed 160 dead fish, mainly black bream of various ages, from the Swan River. Swan River Trust has been monitoring elevated levels of Karlodinium veneficum algae in the mid to upper reaches of the Swan River between Rivervale and middle Swan Bridge since early March. Oxygen levels are variable in the area and as a precaution the Trust will now switch on the oxygenation unit to increase oxygen levels in the river.

Parliament debates fishing licences changes

Legislative Assembly Members debated the recreational fishing licence fees and conditions and various public perceptions of these in a defeated motion to disallow the Regulation changes which commenced in early March.
