Headway made with illegal foreign fishers, but job is far from done
Great headway had been made in combating illegal foreign fishing in Western Australia's northern waters. However, there was still unprecedented destruction of marine life where traditional fishing is allowed.

The Health Department warns of an early outbreak of Ross River and Barmah Forest virus in south-west Western Australia, following a rise in the number of adult mosquitos detected carrying the Ross River virus.

Setting the record straight on extra taxes on fishing tackle.
Recreational fishing sector is seeking to identify an independent revenue stream to support recreational fishing needs around Australia, following examples of government withdrawing or threatening to withdraw funding to recreational fishing peak bodies. Recfish Australia will commission a scoping study.

Fines of up to $75,000 will apply to those caught fishing coral reef fin fish.
It will be illegal to catch coral trout, cods, gropers, red emperors and parrot fish over three nine-day periods during October, November and December during the spawning season on Queensland's east coast.

More State Government funding for boating facilities.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced round 12 of the Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme grants would provide $1.15million for 18 boating projects in WA.

WA Fishing Industry Council on recreational finfish management proposals.
WAFIC is pleased that the WA Fisheries Minister appears to be serious about properly addressing recreational fishing effort on demersal finfish stocks as a matter of sustainability, and encourages all commercial fishermen to consider and comment on coming recreational finfish management proposals.

Clean-up at Koombana Bay, Bunbury.
Students from Cooinda Primary and volunteers from the Dolphin Discovery Centre, Department of Fisheries and Cancer Council cleared more than one tonne of assorted rubbish from Turkey Point in just 1 hour.

Fishing spot lifebuoys 'need funding'
