MINISTER FOR FISHERIES LAUNCHES RECFISHWEST
REGIONAL FISHING CLINICS INITIATIVE

The Minister for Fisheries, Jon Ford launched the Recfishwest regional fishing clinics initiative and unveiled the new purpose built trailer at the Fisheries Research Facility, Hillarys, on Monday July 4 2005.


Recfishwest through the WA state government received funding to expand our free fishing clinics into regional areas to more effectively reach the vast recreational fishing community of Western Australia. The northern regional fishing clinic tour will commence from 12 July in Carnarvon. A southern tour will follow in the spring.

The funding enhances our already successful Healthway sponsored FishSmart SunSmart clinics and will also cover additional new metropolitan fishing clinic initiatives.

A new fishing clinic trailer, will house fishing rods, reels and tackle as well as of resource materials including Recfishwest and Department of Fisheries educational and information brochures.

The regional initiatives propose to target the following coastal communities:


Northern Fishing Clinic Tour:
Carnarvon
Coral Bay
Exmouth
Dampier
Karratha
Port Headland
Broome
Derby
Kununurra


Southern Fishing Clinic Tour:
Bunbury
Busselton
Denmark
Albany
Wellstead
Bremer Bay
Hopetoun
Esperance


Recreational fishing contributes significantly to the health and wellbeing of the community through exercise, family involvement, enjoyment of the environment and consumption of fresh fish, an important food source.

The proposed clinics will pass on messages of general aquatic conservation and recognition of fish species, catch and release, casting techniques and selection of bait and general rigging.
