Onslow youth to catch the benefits of fishing
23 April 2007
As part of National Youth Week 2007, Recfishwest
in conjunction with the Onslow Youth Outreach Project will be conducting
a three day fishing clinic program in Onslow on Tuesday 17th, Wednesday
18th and Thursday 19th April. The fishing clinics will coincide
with the official launch of the Onslow Youth Outreach Project
on Monday 16th April.
The three day 'Gone Fishing' program
will provide local children the opportunity to try their hand at
fishing and learn new and exciting skills and techniques. The clinics
will promote the important messages of 'FishSmart SunSmart'
and 'Addicted to Fishing not Drugs'.
The 'Addicted to Fishing not Drugs'
program encourages children and their families to go fishing, enjoy
a healthy outdoor activity and talk about things that are going
on at school or with their friends. In this way, issues such as
drug use, bullying and self image issues can be detected earlier
to the benefit of the student and the family.
These fishing clinics will provide a fun,
healthy and entertaining activity for the youth of Onslow over the
school holiday period.
This event has been made possible through
funding from the Shire of Ashburton's Onslow Youth Outreach Project
as well as the funds provided through the Recreational Fishing Community
Grants Program.
The Onslow Youth Outreach Project aims to
increase youth and community participation in various sporting,
recreational, and educational activities, as well as creating long
term sustainability of local programs. The project is supported
by the Department for Community Development, BHP Billiton, Chevron,
the Department of Sport and Recreation, and various local community
organisations.
There will be ample photo opportunities
for media with clinic participants and Recfishwest instructors over
the three days. The clinics will be launched at 9:30 am on Tuesday
17th April at Four Mile Creek, Onslow.
