Young Future Leaders on their way

Recfishwest is excited to announce the 15 participants for the inaugural Western Australian Young Future Leaders in Recreational Fishing Program to be held at the Abrolhos Islands, 1 – 6 March 2008.

There were a total of 33 applicants for the 15 coveted positions on the program with successful applicants coming from Kununurra to Albany.

“The high calibre of the applications and eagerness for young recreational fishers to take the next step into advocacy all paves well for the future of recreational fishing in Western Australia.”  Recfishwest Policy Officer and Program Coordinator, Mr Kane Moyle, said today.

“The selected participants will be mentored by a group of recognised leaders in recreational fishing advocacy and management.  This project will help to ensure that there is a trained group of people able to assist in the future management and leadership of recreational fishing.”  Mr Moyle said.

The course will provide a platform for young future leaders to pursue a greater input into the future management of recreational fishing in Western Australia as individuals or through membership of community groups, advisory committees, recreational fishing lobby groups or Government departments. 

“The iconic recreational fishing destination of the Abrolhos Islands will provide a fantastic venue for the program.  The Department of Fisheries must be highly praised for supporting this program and allowing the use of their facility on Rat Island.” Mr Moyle said.

Mr Moyle said that he was looking forward to meeting with the 15 participants for this inaugural program at the Abrolhos Islands and commended all applicants for pursuing and increased role in recreational fishing advocacy.

Recfishwest is exploring opportunities for a greater involvement in recreational fishing advocacy for the unsuccessful applicants.
