The Regional Marine Planning (RMP) initiative was announced by the WA Government in September 2006. RMP is new to WA and only a handful of similar processes have been conducted around the world. The first RMP process in WA is being conducted for the South Coast.

The aim of RMP is to, through a partnership of Government, community and stakeholder groups, establish and promote a scientifically robust framework that:

• enhances cooperation and integration between sectors;

• recognises the importance of social, cultural and economic values that the marine environment can provide for current and future generations; and

• protects and maintains ecological integrity and biological diversity.

Stakeholder engagement is an important aspect of RMP and will involve a number of facets including a formal advisory group, calls for comment, a website and public information exchange sessions in major towns.

A 15 member Planning Advisory Group has been appointed with members from across the South Coast and representative of the key marine interests.

Although not directly represented on the South Coast Planning Advisory Group, Recfishwest is part of the Regional Marine Planning Policy Stakeholder Group, will be kept informed and will closely watch the progress of the South Coast Regional Marine Planning.
